Leon day one

We got up quietly, we think and left the alberque at 6 this morning. In the dark for the first hour and a half however we saw the full moon for the last hour of its show.

There was a sunrise which is forecasted to be our last in some time.

Not much sun for a shadow picture.
Only 180 miles to go to Santiago.

Upon arrival to the old town we were welcomed by three municipal police who gave maps and other help as desired. A nice thing they are doing for us.

The old city walls.
The main plaza at the cathedral.

Feet report: Brian carried his pack the 18 km to Leon today in his sneakers and says his feet/toes are a but better. He thinks that his socks may have been too thick and therefore caused some of his problems.
Kevin has the makings of a blister or two that will need some attention before we walk again on Thursday morning.

Tooth report: yesterday the travel insurance company calls and says they hzve an sppointment for me set up for 7:15 this eve in Leon. Great news I/we don't have to deal in Spanish setting up an appointment. So after we reunite with Kevin and get settled into our hotel Kevin, bless his heart decides to check our where to dentist office is. He still has an international phone with total internet on it and punches in the address. Well to all our surprise it is over 70 miles to the west of the city if Leon. It had a Leon address but it must mean that it is in the province of Leon. 1.5 hours buy car each way wasn't going to cut it. Kevin suggests that we go back to the hotel and ask the front desk person if he knows of a dentist. He knew of one with only a ten minute  walk. However we have to wait till 4 pm after the siesta. At 4 we knocked on the door and Kevin in his bold Spanish gets me in the door and an x-ray and a treatment. Thankfully the dentist could sleek good English and an hour later I walked out with a repaired tooth and advice on a small infection in a root canal and a sinusitis issue in one of my nasal passages. Very professional office and a very nice job done for around $150. Why can't we do this?

Well back at the ranch Brian , Kate and Guy are back at the hotel. Kevin and I stopped on the way back and got some bread, spreadable blu cheese from a shop that smelled wonderfully stinky. Oh, also some great spanish wine and had a little party to cellabrate my repaired tooth.

I, Kate and Guy decided that we had had enough and stayed behind  for a quiet evening while Brian and Kevin went out to eat. Well I got a text that they were at the one and only brew pub in Leon.. Micro brew beer is brand new in Spain and in a very conservative culture they are having a difficult time getting the word out that there is another world out there from the few lagers that are mass produced today. Brian's text said they were having an IPA. I responded I'll be right there.

On the way to the pub.

It was a good beer but not as strong ( hoppy) as we are used to back home.
After a while Kevin ask a waiter if we could see the brewing operation. He replied that that would not be possible. In a few minutes the marketing director, Steve, shows up and gives us a tour of the brewing operation.
The "barrels" they put the beer into to serve from
Using Yakima valley hops.

As we were talking we mentioned that he consider serving a sampler beer selection. We said it would be a great way to how their beers to a largely uninformed public. He said great idea. He    sat at out table with us and shared ideas he has for the future. A very interesting evening.

Tomorrow we meet Werner in front of the cathedral after his arrival. A new member of our group. He will be a great addition.

Paul
